I’m going to start this post with a disclaimer. This is an opinion piece; I am stating my opinion on this matter and nothing else. If you disagree with me, that’s fine. With that said, let’s continue.
I recently watched a Ted talk where this guy talks about how he nearly became a school shooter. He talks about how much pain he was in, how bad his life was going and how bad he felt, so bad that he almost bought a gun (or maybe he actually bought it) with the intention of using it. But thankfully, he backed off.
He talked about how he had just one friend who was nice to him, and how that little bit of kindness helped him greatly. I’ll leave the video here for you to watch.
To me this video is a great example of how far, just how far a little kindness can go. I’ve had to face difficult times in my life, I’ve been bullied, been depressed and all of that; now, I didn’t suffer as much as this man, something I am extremely grateful for, but I can sympathise with how he feels.
When bad things start to happen, you start to focus on only those things, and it becomes nearly impossible to see any good. It’s hard to get out of that mind-set all by yourself.
I was very lucky in that I have family that helped me greatly during the sad times; and friends who were supportive. If they weren’t there, I wouldn’t be surprised if I ended up in a horrible place. Maybe I wouldn’t even be alive.
It’s because of the kindness that others were willing to show me that I was able to find the strength to move forward.
Because I know what kindness can do, I try to be kind as well. Nothing big, just everyday things like helping my friends and family when I can, treating others nicely, that kind of stuff. There are, of course, times when I slip up and I do and say things out of anger (I’m no saint), but I always try to do my best anyway.
I’m a big believer in paying it forward; and videos like these renew my hope in humanity and remind me that it was not all for nothing. There’s a lot of doom and gloom out there, which is exactly why we need to show kindness whenever we can.
A random act of kindness can sometimes change someone’s world, so I encourage you to be a nice person and help spread kindness and understanding. I can’t say it always works, but every little bit counts.
That’s it for this post, I hope you liked it and I hope you have a good day ahead.
