How does someone find purpose in life?

Ah life! We’re all just strutting along, doing our best to stay alive and be happy at the same time. For many, the best way to do that is by having a purpose, a goal you can strive for and look forward to, so that you can look at the hardships you’re facing and say, these are all just steps to reach my future.

But it isn’t that simple for a lot of people. A lot of us are just wandering around aimlessly, not sure what we want to do with our lives; ya sure, we’re here but so what?

So the question on my mind is, how does a person find their purpose? Well, first of all I want to bring a fact to everyone’s attention. Everyone changes over time, which means what we want changes over time, which in turn means the things which fulfil us change and so our purpose can change over time too.  I am not the same person I was 7 years ago; back then I wanted to be an animator, I even learnt everything I needed to become one. But as time went on, my priorities changed, I found what fulfils me change, and so my “purpose” changed as well.

So if you find yourself in a situation where you had a purpose when you are younger but now you’re not satisfied with it, don’t worry, you’re just a different person compared to back then.

But I digress, we need to talk about actually finding a purpose. Well, this is the part where everyone reading this is going to get very angry. There is no sure-fire way to find your purpose. But there are somethings you can do to try and find it.

Look into your interests. What are some of the things you find interesting? Sports, gaming, writing, art? Try looking into your interests and exploring them, you might find something unexpected.

Try talking to someone who is willing to listen. Talking about how you feel can really help. It helps put things in perspective and you can get someone else’s opinion on it. I say someone who is willing to listen because sometimes there are people in your life who you are close to but are not willing to listen to your problems, not because they are bad people necessarily but because they can’t understand your problem. If you don’t know anyone you can talk to, you can try getting professional help by talking to a psychiatrist, psychologist or counselor.

Take a vacation. Sometimes you just need to get away from it all before you can start solving the problem. Try going on vacation and taking a break. Who knows, you might find something in a place where you weren’t even looking.

Just wait. Sometimes the solution just refuses to present itself. If that happens then the best solution may be to just go on with your normal life and wait. It might just come to you out of the blue when you were doing an everyday thing like buying groceries, cleaning your house or even browsing the internet.

One thing I should say is, don’t expect a sudden epiphany at exactly the right time.  Life is complicated and sometimes the right thing just doesn’t happen at the right time. Whatever you do, don’t stress about it too much. Just keep your eyes open and go on with your life, you’ll recognise your purpose when you need to. Who knows, maybe what you are doing right now is your purpose and you just haven’t realised it yet! And if it isn’t, then just keep on going on.

I hope you liked this post and I hope you have a good day ahead.
