Change is inevitable; seasons change, tastes change and people change. We change as time passes and of course when a big event happens in our lives, like meeting someone, getting a job, or when we attain some power. We often hear and sometimes see power changing people, when some politicians are in office for a long time, when a friend in school is given a position of authority, or when someone wins a prize and starts acting arrogant and so on.
The question that’s on my mind is, does power actually completely change someone?
Here’s the thing, I think that power doesn’t really change us, at least not in the traditional sense. I think that when we get power we just bring out more of what was already there, not that something just pops into existence. So if someone is a good person, they will still be a good person even if they have power. They may act a little differently because of the power they have but otherwise they are still the same person. And if someone is bad or just a jerk, they will be even more so when they get power, and if it looks like they changed, that just might be because they were hiding their true nature before and now that they have power they don’t care because they feel like they don’t need to hide it. Of course there are also those with power who hide their true nature and put up the mask of being a nice person but that isn’t what we are talking about here. We’re talking about people who didn’t have power, and act differently after they get it.
Now bear in mind that even if they start acting like a jerk after getting some power, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. As long as they realise their folly and change themselves to something positive. Also, now they know that that side of them exists and they should work on making sure it doesn’t take over again, kind of like how some people know they act more violent or stupid when they’re drunk so they stay careful and watch how much they drink. I guess that’s why they call it being drunk with power.
If someone you know starts acting negatively after getting some power it could be a good thing for you because it gives you some insight into their character. If they act badly at first but soon realise their mistake and change to be something better, then that’s good. If they stay bad or get worse, then you know you have to be wary of them. It may be painful seeing someone you know and trust change like this, but some people are just like that.
In conclusion, power doesn’t really change us in the sense that we think, rather we start to show a side of ourselves we wouldn’t normally show. Whether getting power is good or bad depends on what you do with it.
I hope you liked this post and I hope you have a nice day ahead.
