I’ve come to a point in my life where I find myself disliking most of today’s music. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I dislike all the music that comes out nowadays; but I do feel like a lot of the new music that comes out is bad.
I know there are a lot people who disagree with me, and that’s fine. Your taste in music is probably completely different from mine. But at the same time, I also know there are lot of people who agree with me. There are times when I’m with my friends and we start talking about music we like, and the conversation will inevitably go to how we don’t like any of the new songs that come out nowadays and how old songs were much better.
It’s kind of funny because it makes me wonder, is it that today’s mainstream music is actually bad? Or is it more like how our parents will complain about new music and how they prefer music from their time? Have I simply reached that age where I start to think that my generation is better than the new one?
It is definitely a possibility. But at the same time I can’t help but notice some things when I compare old and new music.
- Some of the songs (the ones with words) I like have more words in them, rather than repeating the same words over and over.
- The melody/music of some songs have more instruments playing or at least have more going on in them rather than just playing a few instruments, repeating the same thing over and over.
As I say this though, I realise that there are many songs I like, that contradict what I pointed out. For example, I really like Daft Punk’s ‘Around the world,’ and that song just has the words “Around the world,” repeating over and over again.
I also enjoy listening to covers where singers will just play a song on a guitar or violin and that’s just a single instrument.
When it comes to that, I really can’t tell you why I enjoy those songs just fine and not new songs which are kind of do the same thing. I could say that those songs are the exception that proves the rule but that feels more like a cheap excuse rather than a solid argument.
I guess all I can put it down to is how these songs make me feel and how easily they can transport me to another world. When I listen to a song I like, I can easily imagine new things and transport myself to my own world where anything can happen. But today’s songs don’t do that for me. All I can think of when I hear those songs are, when is it going to be over, can I just skip it?
But hey, that’s just my opinion on the matter. If you like those songs then go right ahead, you do you and I’ll do me, and we can all get along just fine.
Anyway that’s it for this post. I hope you liked it and I hope you have a good day ahead.
Victor Hugo said that music expresses that which needs to be expressed, but which cannot be expressed in words. When one one listens to a song, the lyrics tell you one thing, the music tells you something else. When one listens to a sonata (played by a single instrument), or a symphony, (played by an entire orchestra), one feels something. That is the purpose of music. If you play a tune on a musical instrument, very soon your mind wanders. You are hearing a message as you play. That is what music is about.
