The internet is a truly awesome thing. It’s also a new thing if you think about it, only gaining real popularity in the 1980’s – 1990’s. But in such a short time, it has become an integral part of so many people’s lives. People use it everyday for entertainment, shopping, gaming, talking with each other; in fact, a lot of people even make a living on it.
So considering all of that, I would like to ask and give my answer to a question. Do we really need the internet and should it be a fundamental right, like education?
Do we really need the internet? In other words, can we live without the internet? For me the answer is yes, we can. Why? Well, the human race has been surviving without the internet for 100s on 100s of years. In terms of survival, the internet is completely unnecessary. I survived without the internet until I was a teenager. I’m hooked now, and I’d be miserable if didn’t have the internet anymore, especially after I‘ve had a taste, but I could still survive without it.
Life without the internet would be very different. A lot of the opportunities which we have now (earning a living as a Youtuber, vlogger, blogger, away from the office, finding friends, online dating, online shopping etc.) wouldn’t exist. Communication would be very different, I imagine we would all have to use phones and call each other or send private messages, or even letters, and no one would be able to share opinions, messages or content at the same level as we do now.
To put it bluntly, the world would be very different, probably more boring, maybe even a harder place to live in, in some ways.
So what about it being a fundamental right, like education? That’s a tough one for me, only because of the number of jerks and idiots who are already there on the internet. Can you imagine how many more jerks and idiots would be on the internet if it were a fundamental right?? Do you?? Not to mention all the internet scams that keep happening. We have enough Nigerian princes asking for money, we don’t need anymore.
Okay that was a joke. In all seriousness, since it is there, my answer is yes it should be a fundamental right, and here’s why.
The internet is tremendous thing that has changed the lives of an uncountable number of people in so many ways. It makes it possible for charities to spread their message and get donations from all around the world, it makes it so people can connect with each other from all around the world, it gives small businesses a better chance against big players, it has created new jobs everywhere, it helps in spreading education to the masses, and it helps people (like me) share their opinions with strangers around the world.
Now there are of course dangers to the internet, like getting hacked, but it has the potential for a lot of good too. So, like I said before, I think the internet should be a fundamental right, but that’s just my opinion.
And that’s it for this post, I hope you liked it and I hope you have a good day ahead.
