The positive side of sin: Greed

I’d like to talk about an idea that hit me many years ago and that came to me again recently; the positive side of sin.

By definition (according to Google) a sin is “an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.” You could also think of a sin as one of the more vulgar, maybe even immoral, aspects of any living thing. Too put it simply, sin is bad.

But I can’t completely agree with this; after all the world isn’t as simple as black and white.  If you look at it from a different perspective, sins are the root of what makes us human.

Take greed, the desire to want more than what we already have, that is what drives us to do more and achieve more. It is because of greed that we are able to better our lot in life and keep shooting for more. Greed drives people to earn more, greed makes people take risks for something better, greed is what drove many explorers to travel the world, because they wanted more from the unknown places; greed is also what makes us want to protect what’s precious to us. Greed could even be what makes us hang out with our friends sometimes, because we want their attention

You could say that greed is in some way related to love too.  Think about it, the desire to keep someone we like all to ourselves, the want to spend time with them (sometimes all of it), even the need we feel to secure a future for our loved ones even if we don’t ask them, just because we want it for them, couldn’t you see that as a form of greed?

Of course, that isn’t to say that greed is good either. The willingness to sacrifice others for our own happiness, the desire to have something just for ourselves even if someone else wants it, the ability to manipulate others for the sole reason of getting what you want, all of those kinds of traits can make you a truly terrible person.

The way I see it, greed is something that can only benefit when used in moderation, kind of like alcohol or chocolate. A little bit feels nice; and it can actually help you out in some ways. Too much and it can turn you into something ugly. Just don’t take it too far, and you’ll be fine.

Anyway, that’s just my take on the thing. What about you? Do you think there’s a good side to sin? Or is all sin damning?

Whatever your thoughts, I hope you liked this post. Have a nice day.
