Only certain people will like doing this but I thought I should put it up there just in case.
Everyone nowadays uses Wikipedia to gain some extra knowledge, from the chemical composition of salt to the biography of the Marvel villain Thanos, you can find out almost anything and everything you want to know from Wikipedia. I have used it a bunch of times to learn new things and I wouldn’t be surprised if you did too. Wikipedia is maintained and edited by the general public; anyone can create new wikipedia articles and edit existing ones as long as they are a user. The process of registering as a user is very easy, it’s just like when you register for almost any other site really, just set up your account and you’re good to go.
Nowadays many students use wikipedia articles to cite their work but most teachers and organisations will not accept these citations since it is maintained by the general public and not hired professionals. However I have heard rumours of some teachers accepting them as genuine research, although I don’t know if it is because the quality of the articles has changed since wikipedia came into existence or whether they are just caving in to the overwhelming use of it.
Anyway I digress, the point of this post is to look into the fact that some people use editing wikipedia articles as a hobby and whether it is good for fighting stress. Now we know that hobbies can help against stress by itself but can editing articles, wikipedia or otherwise be considered a hobby? Let’s look at the definition of a hobby; according to the internet, hobbies are defined as, “an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure;” so if you like to write and edit wikipedia articles during your free time then you can consider it a hobby. Score one for wikipedia article editing.
The second reason why I think wikipedia article editing and writing might be good for stress is all the research and work that goes into it. All that brain power going over articles, looking for what’s wrong, finding out what is right, figuring out how to word it so that anyone can understand what they are reading, you don’t have any time or brain space to think about your stress or what is causing it.
And so that is why I think wikipedia editing is a hobby that can help against stress. Of course most of what I have written here is speculation on my part but I feel that I have made some sound observations for the most part. If you think I am wrong then please let me know why you think so, otherwise why not try taking up wikipedia article editing as a hobby? There are a wide variety of categories, so you are sure to find something that will interest you. If not, well there are still many other hobbies to choose from. Meanwhile I hope you enjoyed this post and you had fun reading it.
