I feel like this post probably isn’t that special; and the reason why I feel that is because many people across different media platforms have talked about this topic. Regardless, everyone has their own opinion on the subject and I just want to share mine in this post. Maybe you’ll agree with it, maybe you won’t, either way I hope you enjoy this post.
There may come a time in your life when you wake up one day and ask yourself, “What am I doing here?”
You might have asked yourself this question already or maybe you haven’t just yet, but once you have asked this question there comes a need to answer it. What is your goal? What drives you to do what you do? Why are you here?
There can be a lot of different answers to those questions, especially when you start something in the beginning. Maybe you really like something, maybe you just wanted to try it out, maybe you didn’t have any other choice, maybe you wanted to do this ever since you were young and you’re dead set on fulfilling that childhood dream of yours. Whatever the reason, you are here now and you are doing what you are doing.
The thing is, sometimes we change and when we change, our goals change. Take me for example, for a long time I wanted to be an animator and make cartoons and tell people my stories, but then somewhere along the way I changed and what I wanted to do changed. I still wanted to tell stories but instead of animations I wanted to become a writer and tell my stories through the written word. So my goals changed and with that my motivation changed and here I am now.
I’m sure the same thing happens to other people too, maybe it happens gradually or maybe it happens suddenly but one day you wake up and you ask yourself that question again, “Why am I here?”
It might not be a major change, what you want to do might be the same but maybe it’s something from the outside that you want to change. Maybe you want to change your look, or maybe you want to work somewhere else for some reason, maybe you want a change of scenery; either way, something is different, maybe not your goal per se, but a part of it.
But let’s say you are one of the people who hasn’t asked yourself this question, when is it that you usually should? Personally I think the best time to ask that question is when you stop enjoying yourself. You started doing something and at first you enjoyed it but then things changed and you stopped enjoying it, that’s when you need to ask yourself this question. After you have asked yourself the question, you need to ask what do I do next. This is where the soul searching comes in and this is also where the answer will be different for everyone.
Everyone is different and has different circumstances; you can’t always dramatically change everything just because your goal has changed. Sometimes you need to weigh all you options and your own goals and try to make a decision you will be most comfortable with. You can talk to other people about it for guidance but in the end, the decision is yours. Don’t make any rash decisions but at the same time don’t be afraid of making a decision. Also remember that your goal may change again later so be ready for that, this is your life and you need to decide what you want to do with it.
