This post has been a long time coming; I knew I would write about this when I wrote about the game Best Fiends but being the lazy bum that I am I never got around to it, until now.
Today I am going to be talking about another mobile app game I’m sure you have heard of, Candy Crush Saga also known as Candy Crush.
Candy Crush is a sweet game (Ha Ha Ha) created by a studio called King who also created other games like:
- Bubble witch saga
- Farm Heroes saga
- Paradise Bay
- Shuffle Cats
But Candy Crush Saga is what they are most well-known for and it is what put them on the map. The game was everywhere when it first came out. You could go to school, college, the train, and the bus, the subway, even the public toilet and you would find someone playing Candy Crush on their mobile phone.
You probably already have the game, but if you don’t you can get it on the App store (put link here) and the Play Store (put link here) for free, you can even play the game on Facebook.
The gameplay is rather simple, the game consists of many, MANY levels (2000 last time I checked) in which you swap coloured candies to make a match of three or more of the same colour to gain points and clear the game board. The candies keep getting replaced so you won’t ever get a candyless game board (endless candy forever, why can’t which happen in real life? Do you know how much more popular I would have been if I had an endless supply of candy?). If you match four or more candies you would get special candies that acted as power-ups. Each level had certain objectives that you needed to complete, like reach a particular score within a certain number of moves or within a time limit, or maybe something like collect this many of a certain type of candy. If you fail you can try again, if you pass you go in to the next level. In the game you are given energy; you use up energy to play a level and once you run out of energy you can’t play anymore. Don’t worry though because your energy recharges over time, or you also have the option of quickly refilling your energy by paying some money (ah in-app purchases, don’t you love them!).
The game even has characters like Mr. Toffee and Tiffi; you meet other characters along your journey too. There are two things that made Candy Crush so different from the other mobile games; one was that it was considered the first and most successful use of the freemium model of gaming that is, people can play the entire game without paying any money if they wanted to. The other was how integrated it was to Facebook. You see, each set of levels was bundled into an episode in the game; after you finished an episode you needed to get tickets from your friends on Facebook in order to progress (between episodes 3 and 64). Don’t worry though, there are other ways to go to the next episode if you are not connected to a Facebook account like finishing special quests, paying money to unlock the next episode, etc. The game was so successful that it even got sequels, Candy Crush soda saga and Candy Crush Jelly saga.

So why do I mention this game? Well there’s a reason it was so popular at the time, it was fun, it was cute, it had nice music and you could go into it and forget about the world around you completely. I’m not saying you should forget about the world around you, I’m just saying that this game is a good distraction and a good way to get yourself out of your head for a while. So go ahead and play the game and a get a sweet (Ha Ha Ha) combo while you’re at it. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go beat level 103.
