A few months ago I came across the hidden gem of a YouTube channel called Last Week Tonight. It’s actually a TV show that comes on HBO in America but they upload segments of their show on YouTube and people like me can watch for free.
For those of you who don’t know, Last Week Tonight is a TV show which talks about certain news segments and/or important topics, but they put a comedic twist to the story. It makes the story that much more interesting to watch, and it makes me want to learn more about what is happening in the world, something which news channels like BBC and CNN have been doing for years but I just don’t find it as interesting (I know, I’m a terrible human being). The host, John Oliver is a comedian who is originally from England, but he now lives in the U.S.
The show mostly talks about stuff in the U.S. but they are still entertaining and they do cover international topics too. Here’s a good example where they talked about doping in the Olympics (fair warning: they do use strong language so be ready for that).
Another thing I like about the show is that they know that there are a lot of people who pretty much hate what the channel does, especially some of the people who they make fun of, like Donald Trump or Cher, but they just take it in their stride and use it to their advantage.
The show evens owns up when people get one over on them (again this video has strong language).
Now I’m not going to say something like, “This is the best show in the world and everyone should watch it,” what I’m saying is this: there’s this YouTube channel which I like to watch when I’m down that talks about serious topics in a funny way. They get the message across and I don’t feel absolutely horrible or start to lose any faith I had in humanity.
At the end of the day the show gives you good laugh.
This blog turned out to be shorter than I expected but I don’t have anything else to say. You should check out the Last Week Tonight YouTube channel, I’ll just leave a link to it here. Let me know what you think about in the comments, meanwhile I’ll try to find something else that can help against stress, so until next time go learn about the world and have a good laugh.
